New Jersey Travel Group Organizes Fundraiser for South Asia Tourism

Northern New Jersey Chapter of Skål International raises funds for tsunami-ravaged resort area
The Northern New Jersey chapter of the international tourism organization Skål has organized a fundraising event to benefit the tourist boards of tsunami-damaged south Asia. The event is slated for January 25, 2005, beginning at 7:00PM at Akbar Restaurant in Edison, NJ. Tickets are $40 per head.
In many of the regions affected by the tsunami, like the Maldives and the Malaysian coast, tourism is the primary product. Without the many high-end resorts that dotted coastline, many of these areas have lost their main income source. With this fundraiser, Skål hopes to raise funds to begin the restoration of these tourist areas.
Bonnie Kessler, Chapter President notes, “In the wake of this horrible tragedy, of course we first have to think about the individuals and families who were lost in the tsunami. But as travel professionals, we at Skål can’t forget that tourism is the primary source of income in the affected area. It is up to us to support the rebuilding of the industry – which will help restore the local economy. By helping to rebuild the resort area by supplying both much-needed funds and tourists, we can do a world of good.”
In a statement on the international organization’s Web site at http://www.skal.org, the following was posted:
After consultation with the Executive Committee and the International Skål Council, it was decided to set a fund at the Skål International bank …to receive donations from any Skål members or others worldwide who might wish to contribute to the disaster fund. While the various aid agencies are on hand to grant immediate relief, Skål International has said that we will be in touch with our members in the affected areas to see how we can help them return to some sense of normality. Those working in the travel and tourism industry in some of the countries affected will have some serious challenges to face and in the spirit of amicale and friendship, which is the cornerstone of our Association, we must try to do what we can to help them rebuild the industry.
