House Spain
Our House Hunting Experiences in Andalucia Southern Spain Montefrio, Granada Province We fell in love with a property in Montefrio Granada. We checked by phone if it was still for sale, flew out two days later only to find it had been sold six months earlier!...

Ancient Gamla (Israel) Ravine of Death
On my second trip to Israel my in-laws treated me like royalty. I was the new family member, visiting from a faraway land. My sister-in-law, Nava, took three weeks off work, and she and her 18-year-old daughter, Karni, showed me northern Israel. Together, we saw the Banias, the headwaters of the Jordan River. We splashed around the Kinneret, known to me as the Sea of Galilee. Down the road at Megiddo, the place of Armageddon, I watched with eeriness as Israeli fighter jets maneuvered over the valley that is said to fill with blood on the Judgment Day. As we traveled, I peered in to the faces of the people around me, trying to understand why Israelis are so nervous about peace with the Arabs...

Hello . . . This is Africa Calling! Find Yourself in Tropical Paradise
It wasn’t the pictures of far off lands as shown so beautifully in National Geographic. It wasn’t stories preached at church of starving refugees that needed help. It was far more immediate than those. I was three weeks old when my parents walked off the plane holding my brother and me. And just like a duck I was imprinted with Africa. Her sights became my reference for beauty. Her animals became my playmates. Her sounds and smells taught me of daily life. Her people became my reference for family and friends. Her triumphs were mine as I watched her growing alongside me. Her wounds were mine too. And although I never bled as so many of her people ...

Cupid Castle Cures - Dromoland Castle in Ireland
When touring Ireland you can stay in a farmhouse, guesthouse, villa, secret hunting lodge, abbey, palace, or country manor house. But for romance you must stay in a traditional and authentic Celtic castle! The first castles were built in England by the Normans, made of wood and earth and mostly on a motte and bailey plan, a central mound (motte), topped with a stronghold (the keep) and circled by a wall. The enclosed area was called the Bailey. While touring the Irish countryside I notice a green ziggurat covered with grass as if pushed up from the depths and into the sky. The first mottes were more defensive in nature...

The Key To Key Biscayne - Sonesta Beach Resort
Sure, it's hot in Florida in the middle of July. But I live in Baltimore . . . it's hot here too in the middle of July! So, what better time to head to a beach...especially one that wouldn't be as crowded in high summer as the closer Maryland beaches where everyone heads "down-y ocean," as they say in this part of the world. So, off I went to sunny (and yes, hot *and* humid!) Florida for a summer beach vacation. And you know what? Summer or winter, Florida is an ideal vacation destination (Not that that's a major newsflash, of course, but I thought I'd confirm it just in case you had any doubts!). I flew from Baltimore to Ft. Lauderdale, not Miami...

Hiking Leihi in the Hawaiian Islands
October 2001 - terrorism, anthrax, airports in turmoil and still it took us only nine hours door-to-door from our Winter Palace in fabulous Las Vegas to our luxurious accommodations at the Aston Coconut Plaza Hotel five blocks off the world reknowned Waikiki Beach. The Coconut was to serve as our stalwart base of operations during our two night layover on Waikiki. We're on a 20th anniversary mission to Maui, with a hike to Diamond Head as a warm up. Neil, the cool desk guy, checks us in in no time, recommends a bar and we're at the Shore Bird Bar & Restaurant on the beach. Mango Margaritas, spring rolls and the sound of the surf prime us for a short stroll towards Diamond Head. It's now about five pm local time and Waikiki comes alive, the Tiki torches flicker and live music wafts through the air at each hotel we pass. Duke's is the choice for dinner; it's Waikiki cool, fresh fish done Duke-style - on the open air patio and we're sippin' a '99 Duckhorn ...

Aerobatic Sangfroid at 8 Gs
"You're flying with 'Bags' and 'Spare'," the pilot told me with an unexplained grin. "Stormin' Norman" was checking the flight schedule while he showed me around the hangar spaces the day before my flight. "When you arrive for briefing, tell Bags I said he's a real loser." Fighter jocks. Despite the professionalism evident in everything they do, the pilots at Fighter Combat International maintain a healthy rivalry among themselves and invite their guests to take part in the fun. You'll notice immediately that everyone who works here is always smiling. I would be, too - my image of Heaven itself includes an 8,000 foot runway....

Adventure Under the Volcano In Costa Rica
From airplane to bus to taxi to horse, I arrived at La Mansion Inn Arenal with tons of questions: exactly what does a nice Costa Rican hotel look like? What types of food do they eat there? Will my Spanish be good enough to get me farther than el baño? All these questions and more were quickly answered as I quietly stepped forward into a tropical grotto neatly planted between the cities of Arenal and Fortuna of the north-western region of Costa Rica. Decked out with a perfectly manicured lawn, exotic flowers and an infinity pool, this is far from a typical hotel. This resort comes with privacy and a backdrop that jumps right off the screen of the Discovery Channel. Palm trees dot the hillsides, and clouds massage the deep blue skies over the blazing volcano...

Something By The Sea - Le Merigot Santa Monica
Le Merigot is a charming European-style boutique hotel and spa overlooking the sand and surf in Santa Monica, California. Anticipating good weather, and the luxury and service that heralds the only Mobil “Four Star” and AAA “Four Diamond” property in Santa Monica, Dave and I drove across the desert from Las Vegas to the beach for a romantic getaway. Located at 1740 Ocean Avenue, a main thoroughfare, Le Merigot Beach Hotel and Spa was easy to find. As soon as we entered the driveway the parking attendant alerted the valet who whisked our luggage upstairs. Check-in took exactly two minutes. Being December, the lobby reflected the warm, festive sights and smells of Christmas. I noticed a table with stacks of USA Today, the New York Times, and Los Angeles Times. “Please help yourself,” the reservation specialist told me. “They’re complimentary?” I asked, surprised. “Yes, welcome to Le Merigot”...

Find Your Trills in Montserrat
Quiet and extraordinarily patient, they endlessly search the treetops for a chance to add one more notation on their treasured checklists. For them the thrill is never gone AND the "trill" part of that delight. Their boundless optimism is forever present. Bird watching for the enthusiast (or the novice) is a chance not to be missed, and "peer pressure," never a problem. For the binocular-carrying visitors who come to the laid back island environment of Montserrat, most southerly of the Caribbean's Leeward Islands, it's part of a memorable stay. Rare though they may be, part of the quest is to see the country's national bird, the Montserrat oriole, whose distinctive orange and black plumage was once easily seen the length and breadth of this 12 miles by...
