Samoa, Heart of Polynesia
The islands of Samoa are emerging as an exciting new South Pacific travel destination between Hawaii and New Zealand. This "Heart of Polynesia" is politically split into two distinct entities 80 miles apart. The country Samoa is a former German colony, captured by New Zealand in 1914 and granted independence in 1962. In 1997 the name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa.
American Samoa is the only U.S. territory south of the equator. Annexed by the United States for use as a naval base in 1900, the territory no longer has any military significance. Instead, Pago Pago currently hosts the StarKist and "Chicken of the Sea" tuna canneries, making it the most important commercial fishing port under the American flag.

Mirama Hotel in Surabaya to return to Accor network as a Mercure Hotel
Accor is to manage a new hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia, with the opening of the Mercure Surabaya in June 2006.
The former Mirama Hotel will be re-branded Mercure Surabaya after an extensive one-year renovation package begins in June 2005 to guest rooms, the lobby and all public areas. The multi-million dollar renovation will feature a modern interior design with an elegant Asian touch, while highlighting the 30-year old hotel's unique history.

The STB's Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr Lim Neo Chian, said, “In 2004, Singapore welcomed a record high of 471,000 Indian visitors, making India our 6th largest visitor-generating market. This represents a 21% growth over the previous record of 375,000 Indian visitors we achieved in 2002. In tandem with the buoyant growth forecast of the Indian economy, we are confident that India will continue to be amongst Singapore’s fastest growth markets.”

Le Meridien Passport to travel - Bargain summer rates available at hotels worldwide
Le Meridien has slashed up to 50 per cent off rates worldwide this summer, offering bargains at hotels and resorts on five continents between June 1 and September 31, including new properties such as Le Meridien Munich and Le Meridien Pearl of Seychelles cruise.
Covered in Le Meridien Summer Passport programme are more than 30 hotels in Europe -
including a dozen in the UK- as well as six in North Africa. Asia, too, figures

One of the region's leading hospitality trade magazines, HOTEL Asia Pacific, has been honoured by the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) for its commitment to editorial excellence.
The magazine, established in January 2000, was honoured in the "Best Trade Media" sector of the SOPA 2002 "Awards For Editorial Excellence", which were held in Hong Kong on June 6.
The judging panel for the prestigious awards was drawn from the region's leading publications, as well as the World Association of Newspapers and the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Other winners in the awards, which this year drew a record number of entries, included Time, Newsweek, Fortune and the Far Eastern Economic Review.

NEW RESORT IN SIEM REAP - CAMBODIA
Sanctuary Resorts, the Hong Kong based resort management company creating holistic resorts where people balance their body, mind and spirit, has signed a management and development contract with Hotel de la Paix, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The new resort, on which construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of
2002, will be scheduled for opening in November 2003. Hotel de la Paix - a Sanctuary
Resort, will feature 100 guest rooms averaging 40 sq. mtr and is set in central Siem
Reap, on the site of the former, French colonial hotel with the same name, which was

BACKPACKER NETWORK
Accor is to make its debut in the backpacker market, initially with three backpacker 'hostels' in Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington, and with a number of other sites under consideration in the rest of New Zealand and Australia.
Accor will be the first major hotel group to enter the backpacker market and will do so with the aim of providing contemporary backpacker-style accommodation but with more consistent and reliable operations. Accor will enter the market with product that meets the four main criteria of backpacker travellers - prime locations, good-value prices, and high levels of safety and cleanliness.
A new brand name will be launched soon for the backpacker's initiative, which will be rolled out over the next twelve months with a combination of new developments and management takeovers.
